Project Overview
The Town of Saugeen Shores is planning next steps for Moore Bridge (Structure SS-09), which is in poor condition. The bridge is about 7 km southeast of Port Elgin, on McKechnie Sideroad over Snake Creek, between Concession Road 8E and The River Road.
Moore Bridge is a one-lane single span steel truss structure that has been closed to vehicles for over a decade. The Town has reviewed options, including removing, repairing, or replacing the bridge. Repair or replacement would also mean upgrading the road approaches to meet current standards.
After studying the site and considering factors like:
- The need for a longer span (37.2 m) and a higher deck,
- Low traffic volumes,
- Limited connection to the road network,
- And the high cost of replacing the bridge and upgrading 2 km of road,
The recommended solution is to remove the bridge.
What to Expect
- McKechnie Sideroad would become an unmaintained right-of-way, with the exception of the most southerly section, approximately 100 to 150 meters in length.
- Maintaining the most southerly section of McKechnie Sideroad will ensure continued access to the two residential properties at its intersection with The River Road.
- Removal of the bridge will improve the flow of Snake Creek under normal conditions and storm events by removing impediments from the floodplain and will enhance the natural environment as both sides of the river would be restored to a more natural condition.
