Project Overview
Project Overview
As part of the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) Connecting Link Program, funding has been received for rehabilitation work along Goderich Street between Concession 6 and Concession 10. The project will involve the resurfacing of the asphalt on Goderich Street, as well as the restoration of the historic brick intersections in the downtown Port Elgin. Additionally, there will be minor underground infrastructure upgrades.
What to Expect
Project Schedule
This project has been scheduled to minimize the disruption to downtown businesses and traffic, especially as the community welcomes back seasonal residents and visitors this summer.
- Construction will begin in the downtown Port Elgin section first. Phase 1 will take place before Victoria Day weekend, with Phase 2 commencing after Victoria Day and ending by June 27
- Work will take place between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday
Traffic and Parking Impacts
- While work is completed in downtown Port Elgin (Phase 1 & 2), sections of Goderich Street will be closed to traffic. Detour routes will be in place to redirect traffic around construction zones.
- Pedestrian access to downtown businesses will remain open throughout the construction period.
- Municipal parking lots and pedestrian routes will be available to ensure continued access to downtown businesses.
- Alleyways will remain open for deliveries to businesses located along Goderich Street.
- Ridge Street (from Bruce Road 25) will be temporarily opened to provide an alternative route to the south end of Port Elgin.
Resurfacing Method
The Mill and Overlay (aka Shave and Pave) method will be used to resurface the street. This method allows for traffic to continue in other lanes while work is completed.
